Automotive seat leather needs four properties that everyday upholstery leather does not: high abrasion resistance for repeated contact, colourfastness under direct UV exposure through glass, flame-retardant performance, and, for PU grades, resistance to hydrolysis in humid storage and climates.

OEM seat material is produced to a factory's exact colour code and tolerance, often for Tier 1 suppliers such as Toyota Boshoku, Adient, or Lear Corporation, who assemble the finished seat. Volumes are higher, and colour consistency between batches matters more than it does for aftermarket work.
Aftermarket seat leather serves reupholstery shops and seat cover manufacturers. Colour and texture ranges are wider, order volumes are typically smaller, and turnaround time matters more than exact factory colour matching in most cases.

PU leather uses a polyurethane coating and is generally softer, lighter and more breathable than PVC leather. PVC leather uses a polyvinyl chloride coating and is typically more durable, waterproof and resistant to abrasion. For everyday car seats, PU offers the more premium hand-feel; for heavy commercial or export-grade seating where waterproofing matters most, PVC performs better. Both are supplied phthalate-free and REACH-tested.
