Standard indoor PU or PVC leather is not built for a boat. Marine-grade material adds UV stabilisers to resist fading and cracking in direct tropical sun, a moisture-resistant coating to stop water working into the backing, and an anti-fungal or mildew-resistant finish, since boats spend long periods damp and humid without ventilation. A reinforced knit backing also gives the material the stretch needed to wrap around bolsters and curved seat bases without tearing.

Before placing a bulk order, ask for accelerated UV weathering results and anti-fungal or anti-mildew test data specific to marine use, not just a general abrasion report. REACH Annex XVII and RoHS cover restricted substances such as phthalates and heavy metals, and remain relevant even for outdoor marine material.

Boat seat leather needs UV stability, waterproofing, and mildew resistance beyond what standard indoor PU or PVC offers, along with a reinforced backing that can stretch and wrap around curved seat bases without tearing.
It is not recommended. Standard indoor material typically fades, cracks, or develops mildew far faster than marine-grade vinyl once exposed to direct sun, salt spray, and humidity.
The material itself resists water well, but a finished seat is only as waterproof as its seams and stitching. Proper construction at the sewing stage matters as much as the material choice.
