Waterproof faux leather gets its resistance from the coating layer, either a polyurethane (PU) film or a polyvinyl chloride (PVC) film, applied over a knitted or woven fabric backing. The coating stops water from soaking through the material itself. A finished product is only as waterproof as its seams, though: stitching and cut edges need proper sealing or backing to match the material's own resistance.
